A Café With a Difference
Not just a cafe – a community & social business
With help from Funding For All & Social Enterprise Kent, we turned our not for profit community cafe into a fully-fledged social enterprise in 2018. Our social aims are to reduce social isolation in Whitstable, welcome all in with the Pay it Forward and always ensure the cafe is inclusive, accessible & affordable.
We train young people with supported learning needs in our kitchen & cafe, and have relationships with Canterbury College, Shaw Trust, Choices Support, Stamford Hill Prison Working Out scheme, Community Payback & St Nicolas’ School. Our staff are trained in basic Makaton and our menus are available in pictorial & Braille format.
We are assisted by 3 wonderful non executive directors and have bi-monthly board meetings with them to ensure we remain viable and function sustainably as a business as well as achieve our social aims. Information about us and them is available on our About page. To find out more about social enterprises and why it is great to buy social, look up Social Enterprise UK.
Having a party, event or a meeting?
Do you need a last-minute celebration cake or looking for a vegan & gluten-free bake or some healthy treats for a workshop?
We are able to provide outside catering for small functions, including sweet and savoury and very happy to discuss food intolerances and naturally sweetened choices.
Just pop in or send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org outlining what you are after. Please give us at least 48 hours notice for celebration cakes and a week for catering orders.
Pay It Forward
The Umbrella Café CIC is part of Whitstable’s Pay it Forward scheme, along with Revival and Caffe 89. It’s an easy way to provide a meal or drink for someone in need.
You don't need to buy anything from us – sometimes people just leave us donations or they add something onto their bill. Each £1 someone donates is turned into a tally line – we then take the value of anything ordered via Pay It Forward off the blackboard.
Just ask one of the team to put your chosen amount on the tally, and we’ll do the rest…
